Tucked away in a neighborhood just beginning to see revitalization is A Tavola, a small menu Italian bistro that people regularly travel to far and wide for its fresh ingredients and its romantic flair. Upscale for its area but casual in comparison, A Tavola is a restaurant where love and care are put into every dish, focusing on perfection with a few items over mediocrity on a large variety.
Things tend to come in lucky threes at A Tavola, and those in the know go make their reservations for a week day and head on out to this transformed row house. Their specialty is their buttery, chewy Gnocchi, wonderfully complemented with crunchy sage leaves. Of course, other rotating selections come in as close seconds, like the Short Ribs and whatever fresh fish swims in that evening. A fine assortment of Italian wines side well with any dish offered and, while quite varied in price, are all excellent selections in their own right. Desserts are included in their rotation, with patron emphasis placed upon the Flourless Chocolate Cake and the Panna Cotta! However, Chicagoans should especially be noted about their smaller portion sizes and are encouraged to order an appetizer as well as an entree for each guest.
Comfort and familiarity are key ingredients to this small locale, making each guest feel both welcome and right at home, many regulars of whom are greeted on a first name basis. Soft music soothes away the problems of the day while adding a subtle hint of elegance to the ambiance. The windows are nice and large, and the tables are spread apart just enough to allow intimacy without pompousness. A popular spot in summer, the bold and daring have the wait staff help them cut through the kitchen and are rewarded with a starlit sky while dining in their backyard patio.
One aspect that truly delights its patrons are the cooking classes held, usually twice a month. Couples wearing their kitchen best can get to know each other during a unique, enjoyable experience, learning how to create an authentic Italian dish of which they get to enjoy afterwards! Reservations for these Monday night classes are strongly recommended due to its popularity.
